Jan. 31

Decided to take off and go shoot a few snow pictures in a place I love, just one problem, no snow. I could not believe that 20 miles from my house, which had lots of snow, as I go up toward the mountains the snow just vanished. So, I stopped about half way to my destination and shot a few pictures of my favorite waterfalls that had sun on them for the first time I have been by in months. These were shot with a 4X ND filter and a circular polarizer.

Had a little surprise snow this morning, about 4" and the birds were at the feeder with a big hunger and allowed me to take some pictures while I was out with the grandkids playing in the snow.
Most of these are common birds for the area, House Finch, Goldfinch, Pine Siskins, and Cardinal, but at least I got to fire off a few shots and kill some time.
Shots were made at ISO 400 with 100-400 Canon lens.

Had a little time and a friend and I made a run to see what was happening at one of our favorite places. After dodging a couple of landslides, ice covered roads, and cold weather, boy are photographers and golfers dumb, we got several nice shots.
These were shot in the late afternoon and the sun was gone or in cloud cover so sometimes I used a flash to fill in. Shot most of the images at small aperatures and medium exposers of 1/15 or less. Shot ISO of 100 using Canon 24-105 IS f/4 lens with my Canon 5D

We had a little snow last night, so the birds and squirrel were visiting the feeder again today, so I was able to get some shots to stop being bored.
Grandkids and I love to watch the activity.

While waiting around for lunch to heat in the microwave, I saw these birds at the feeder on the deck. Just common birds, Cardinal and Housefinch, but still nice to have something to shoot.

Was just tired of sitting around doing nothing, so I went to take some shots of a waterfall I like to practice on. These were taken with a 17-40mm Canon f/4 lens and no filters. They were shot at 100 ISO on TV and most were taken between 0.3 and 1/6 sec., and I dialed in a -2 stop sometimes to close down aperture. No HDR was done to the images, just a little clean up for rain and mist on the lens.

Hope to get some snow pictures this weekend, but will have to wait and see if it snows somewhere.

Jan. 5, 2009

Made it from Florida to West Virginia this past weekend without being killed by all the idiots on the road. I-95 was a zoo with all the bowl traffic as well as all the people returning to the north from a Christmas vacation. I did not take any images on the way home, not much to see in the rain and fog, but I did get to count a lot of cars from all over the country. I saw cars from all four corners of the US and 3 provinces of Canada. Of the 50 states I saw all the states except North and South Dakota, and Alaska. Not bad, even got the District of Columbia. That is the best I have ever done, lots of time in traffic to look. I am going to the Outer Banks soon and hopefully will get some nice ocean shots before heading back to Florida for a short break.
